●●● GILBERT - NORTH ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #17- January 18, 2011
It was a tale of two halves on Tuesday night at North high school. The Gilbert Tigers took on the North Mustangs who are the #3 team and 2 time defending state champions. The Tigers played a pretty good first half and led by 4 points by a score of 29 - 25 behind good passing, taking care of the ball and taking good shots on offense.

It seemed like the ten minute intermission took everything out of the Tigers as North did pretty much whatever they wanted - mostly transition layups. The Tigers good shots in the first half turned into rushed shots in the second, which basically led to long outlet passes to North's athletic guards for easy pass-back layups. Even after multiple instructions by the coaches to get back on defense the Tigers just seemed disinterested in doing the little things needed to remain competitive in the contest. Over the last month Gilbert has shown flashes of playing very good basketball, but if they ever want to get over the hump they are going to have to take it upon themselves to focus on being mentally tough, communication on the court and doing what they are supposed to do individually on each possession. Statistically, DJ Hurd had a nice game as he only missed 1 shot from the field, had 3 rebounds and 2 assists. He and Vince Guido were the only 2 Tigers who graded out on the positive end for the game.

Up next for the Tigers is another tough Central region game on the road versus an athletic Basha Bears team on Friday night.

●●● GILBERT - HIGHLAND ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #16- January 14, 2011
The Gilbert Tigers ended their 3 game losing streak at home Friday night versus their cross-town rival of the Highland Hawks. Gilbert started the game strong on the defensive end allowing only 1 point in the opening quarter. Highland got their offense rolling in the second quarter and the Tigers matched the Hawks to make the halftime score 24-17. The Tigers felt like they could of had a double digit lead if they were a little sharper on the offensive end.

To open the second half the Tigers were actually worse protecting the ball as Highland's pressure defense got to the Tigers. Highland was able to actually take a 1 point lead in the 3rd quarter and by the end the score was knotted at 30. The Tigers defense and rebounding continued to stay strong, but a couple of Erik Crawford threes assisted by Vince Guido extended the lead to 6 points. The Tigers didn't quite make their free throws down the stretch, but did enough to seal the win. It was a bit disappointing to see the Tigers finish with 19 turnovers after only having 6 in the first half. Something the Tigers are going to have to work on if they want to win games down the stretch. Gilbert was able to out-rebound Highland 35-27, which helped to control the pace of the game. The Tigers were led in scoring by Erik Crawford's 20 points and 9 rebounds. Connor Toolson led Highland with 13 points.

Up next for the Tigers is the 5A 1 defending state champs as the will travel to North on Tuesday night to play a tough non-conference road game.

●●● GILBERT - MESA MOUNTAIN VIEW ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #15- January 11, 2011
Tuesday night the Tigers dropped another region game against the Mt. View Toros. Despite the score the Tigers actually played a pretty good game, especially in the first half. Defensively the Tigers were able to defend much of what Mt. View wanted to do offensively and Cody Martin did a great job taking away scoring opportunities from Mt. View's leading scorer Jaren Sweeney as he finished with 7 points on the night.

Mt. View's size started to wear down the Tigers as the game progressed and the Toros started to regularly come up with second chance points and buckets in the paint. Mitch Reber played a great game as he defended the paint extremely well, was one of Gilbert's leading rebounders and led Gilbert with 14 points on the night. Gilbert plays host to a great rivalry on Friday night as the Highland Hawks come into the Jungle for a big Central Region contest. Hope to see a packed gym!

●●● GILBERT - MESQUITE ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #14 - January 07, 2011
T
he Gilbert Tigers played a disappointing game on Friday night where their cross-town rival of Mesquite took it to the Tigers from the opening tip. Mesquite's Jason Garrettson had his way with the Tigers scoring (31 points) in a variety of ways. When Gilbert was in a man defense he was able to get past defenders to score layups and when cut off he found his teammates for baskets. The Tigers decided to switch to a zone to contain Garrettson's penetration and then Mesquite's Sami Bazi (18 points) went off from downtown hitting on 4 straight threes in the third quarter.

Mesquite used a box and one to defend Erik Crawford (11 points) which allowed other Tigers to be open for shots. Gilbert's Freddie Lash took advantage and had a nice game offensively as he totaled a career high of 25 points.

The Tigers are going to have to regroup very quickly as they play Mesa Mt. View next Tuesday on the road.

●●● GILBERT - CORONA DEL SOL●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #13 - January 04, 2011
The Gilbert Tigers fell to a very talented Corona Aztecs team on Tuesday night by a score of 57 - 52. The Tigers played three nice quarters of basketball, but it was the 2nd quarter that doomed the Tigers as they were outscored 19 - 7 sparked by Corona's Casey Benson's three 3 pointers.

The Tigers were dominated on the glass all night. Defensively the Tigers defended each possession fairly well, but it was Corona's ability to come up with second chance points which prevented Gilbert from really threatening Corona. One big indicator that shows Corona was the aggressor was the fact that they shot 22 free throws to Gilbert's 4.

●●● GILBERT - SOUTH MOUNTAIN -PUHSD Holiday Tournament ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #12 - December 20, 2010
The Gilbert Tigers were able to even up their overall season record at 6 wins and 6 losses Tuesday night with probably their best played game in the Phoenix Union Holiday Tournament. The Tigers were able to take a home a 47 - 30 victory over the well coached South Mountain Jaguars.

The story of the game was Gilbert's strong defense which held South Mountain to 12 second half points and really made it difficult for them to get easy looks at the basket. Cody Martin was assigned the task of covering 6'5 Ronald Tademy and did an outstanding job with the help of his teammates holding him to 4 points for the game. Mitch Reber had a great game also has he sparked the Tigers in the first half with his 8 points, but more importantly it was Mitch's rebounding that was key to the game. Every time the Tigers forced South Mountain into a missed shot it was Mitch cleaning up the boards. Vince Guido also had a nice game running the team at the lead guard and it was his back to back charges taken in the second half that gave another boost to the Tiger's energy on the floor. Also having a nice game was Freddie Lash who had a break out game offensively as he had 13 points in the second half on a combination of three pointers, three point plays and fast break baskets.

This was a great game for the Tigers as they are starting to play well and have something to build on when they come back from their small break over the Holidays. The Tigers will resume action on January 4th at home versus a very talented Corona team. Happy Holidays to the parents, players and supporters. Hope to see you rooting on the Tigers when we start up the tough Central Region play in the second semester.

●●● GILBERT - TREVOR BROWNE -PUHSD Holiday Tournament ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #11 - December 20, 2010
The Tigers responded with a well played game against Trevor Browne with a 64 - 50 victory. The Tigers used a strong man defense to hold the Bruins to 2 points in the opening quarter and 14 for the half to hold a 33 - 14 lead at the break. The Tiger's Kendall Collins and Donte Robinson played quality minutes as the Tigers were in some early foul trouble.

The scoring for the Tigers was very spread out as 11 Tigers scored and they were led by Erik Crawford's 17 points and Cody Martin's 13 points. To finish off the tournament on Tuesday the Tigers are to play a well coached and talented South Mountain team who beat a very good Mountain Pointe squad in overtime on Monday night. The game is set to start at 4:30 pm.

●●● GILBERT - CENTRAL -PUHSD Holiday Tournament ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #10 - December 18, 2010
The Gilbert Tigers played with no energy in the second round of the Phoenix Union Christmas tournament as the Central Bobcats cruised to a 66 - 45 victory. This was a disappointing effort by the Tigers as Central had their way from the opening tip. Central pretty much did whatever they wanted regardless if Gilbert was playing zone or man to man.

Central was able to carve up the Tigers with penetration to the paint and when they didn't want to score layups they kicked out for uncontested three pointers. Central's offense was well balanced as they had 5 guys in double figures. The coaches did see a nice effort by DJ Hurd and Kendall Collins who came off the bench to take offensive charges and rebound on both ends aggressively.

The Tigers better come back with better energy and focus as they play a fast and an attacking Trevor Browne team on Monday at 3 pm.

●●● GILBERT - CHAPARRAL, COLORADO -PUHSD Holiday Tournament ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #09 - December 17, 2010
The Tigers were able to come out victorious on day 1 of the Phoenix Union Holiday Tournament by beating a tough and scrappy Chaparral team from Colorado by a score of 56 - 55. Chaparral came out and jumped the Tigers with a couple of threes, but Gilbert was able to scrape back into the game with some good transition basketball and actually held a slim 1 point lead at halftime. The same held true throughout the second half and every time it looked like Gilbert was going to pull away, Chaparral made timely baskets by their dynamic duo of Corey Calvert (17 pts.) and Josh Adams (11 pts.).

The Tigers had a 3 point lead with about 1:30 left when Chaparral went to a 1-3-1 half court zone and caused some poor turnovers by Gilbert, but they weren't able to convert on their end. With 11 seconds left Gilbert missed the front end of a 1 and 1 and Chaparral came down for the last shot, but Gilbert's defense caused some confusion and Chaparral got a low percent shot up at the end. The ball got knocked out of bounds at the buzzer and Gilbert held on for a 1 point win. The Tigers were led in scoring by senior point guard Vince Guido's 15 points and Cody Martin's 11 points. Alphonso Crawford and Mitch Reber also both chipped in with 9 points apiece with some nice interior scoring and rebounding. The Tigers move on to the second round on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm versus a very athletic Central Bobcats team.

●●● GILBERT - DOBSON  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #08 - December 13, 2010
The Tigers went on the road in a rare Monday night game to take on the Dobson Mustangs to open up the Central Region and came up with a huge 72 - 68 overtime victory. Dobson came out in the first quarter and blasted the Tigers with post touches and a array of long bombs from downtown. The Tigers just couldn't handle Dobson's Marcus Tipton as he notched 12 of his team's 22 first quarter points. The Tigers did a better job clamping down on the post in the second quarter with the help of Donte Robisnon, but failed to cover Dobson's shooters as they nailed 4 treys in the second quarter totaling 6 treys for the half. With all of that the Tigers only found themselves down 7 points at the half by a score of 38 - 31.

Coming out of the locker room you could see the Tigers efforts on the defensive end paying off as Dobson just had a hard time finding their way, but the Tigers just couldn't seem to find ways to put the ball in the hole on their own end. As the third quarter neared the end Dobson rallied off back to back baskets to extend their lead to 13. In the huddle between the 3rd and 4th quarters the Tigers were obviously very frustrated and the disappointment was visible.

Starting the 4th quarter the Tigers including Austin Harper, DJ Hurd, James Wirthlin, Mitch Reber and Fred Lash turned up the energy and erased that 13 point deficit. In one particular possession there were three different Tigers that dove on the floor for loose balls. You could see the fight that was left in the Tigers. Dobson had the ball with about a minute left tied, but the Tigers were able to force them into a turnover. The Tigers took over and wound the clock down to the end for the last shot and executed nicely, but only to find Erik Crawford's 15' jumper rim out.

In overtime the Tigers scored the first 5 points including a three pointer by Erik Crawford and a basket by Phonsy Crawford that was beautifully assisted by Vince Guido. The Tigers were led in scoring by Erik Crawford's 19 points and Alphonso Crawford's huge 16 second half points. Cody Martin was also able to chip in with 11 points of his own. The game was changed though by Mitch Reber's defensive rebounding presence and the energy provided by the guys who started the 4th quarter. Nice job!

The Tigers now head to the Phoenix Union Christmas tournament starting this Friday night at North high school. The Tigers open up with the Chaparral Wolverines from Colorado at 7:30. There is a bracket for the tournament on our homepage. Hope to see you there.

●●● GILBERT - HAMILTON  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #07 - December 09, 2010
The Tigers lost a tough road game on Thursday to the Hamilton Huskies by the score of 43 - 36. Again the Tigers played outstanding defense holding the Huskies to a mere 43 points, but again it was the offense that doomed the Tigers. The Huskies, coached by Kevin Hartwig, did an excellent job on the Tigers shooters by switching screens and dominating the paint with blocks, alterations and rebounding.

The Tigers are going to have to regroup in practice to find ways to generate crisper offense as they go on the road again next Monday to open up region play versus the Dobson Mustangs.

●●● GILBERT - CHAPARRAL  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #06 - December 07, 2010
On Tuesday night the Gilbert Tigers played another well played game, but came up 2 points short by a score of 57 - 55. Chaparral came in with a 3 - 0 record and ranked #1 in 5A II by the Tribune. The Firebirds came out and blasted the Tigers by going up 15 - 3 early in the first quarter. The Tigers tried to take away the paint and the Birds knocked down threes and when we closed out on the perimeter they just seemed to find the rim with post passes and offensive rebounds.

The Tigers hung in there though and clawed their way back to cut the score to one going into the lockerroom at the half. Crawford and Crawford did most of the damage in the first half as Erik and Phonsy combined for 17 of the Tiger's 29 points. The Firebirds came out strong in the third quarter as they took a 9 point lead going into the final stanza. Again the Tigers chipped away at the score and just couldn't find enough baskets down the stretch to pull out the win. The Tigers were led in scoring by Erik Crawford's 20 points and the strong play of Mitch Reber as he scored 10 points and came up with numerous rebounds and plays in the paint all evening for the Tigers.

●●● GILBERT - DESERT VISTA  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #05 - December 02, 2010
On the road versus Desert Vista the Tigers played a good first half holding the Thunder to only 11 first half points and held a 23 - 11 lead.

The second half although was completely different as the Thunder opened up with two straight threes and applied full court pressure that the Tigers just couldn't consistently break.

The Thunder's pressure limited the Tigers to 12 points in the second half and Desert Vista pulled away with a 44 - 35 victory.

●●● GILBERT - BROPHY  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #04 - November 30, 2010
The Gilbert Tigers opened up their regular season at home versus the Brophy Broncos on Tuesday night. Brophy virtually returns everyone from last years team and their experience showed in the last quarter of the game.

The Broncos started the game strong as they went on a 7 - 2 run to open the game, but the Tigers stayed strong and closed to make it a 2 point ball game at the end of the first quarter. The same held true for the second as the Tigers actually outscored the Broncos by one and only trailed by one at intermission. As for the third quarter the Broncos again started strong, but the Tigers clawed back with the help of Erik Crawford's back to back threes, but Brophy's Chris Pierre was able to hitting a spinning jumper in the lane at the buzzer to give Brophy a slight one point lead at the end of the third.

The fourth started out the same as the previous three quarters with a strong start by Brophy, but this time the Tigers did not have a response of their own. The Broncos ended up outscoring the Tigers by 15 points which sealed the deal.

The damage by Brophy's big two in Sai Tummala (15 points) and James Harper (19 points) was a major factor in the game. The Tigers were led in scoring by Erik Crawford's 13 points. It was disappointing to lose the game against a good opponent especially after playing solidly throughout. No time to dwell as the Tigers go on the road Thursday night and play the Desert Vista Thunder who currently stand at 4 - 2 on the season.

●●● GILBERT - HAMILTON - Fear the Hop Holiday Tournament ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #03 - November 27, 2010
In the 5th place game of the Fear the Hop tournament the Tigers met up with long time Fiesta Region foe and well coached Hamilton Huskies and were able to pull out a 48 - 37 victory. This was a well played game by both teams with execution on the offensive end and hard nosed defense on the other.

The Huskies jumped out to an early 7 to zero lead, but the Tigers were able to claw back and take an 11 to 10 first quarter lead. The score remained close throughout the four quarters and the Tigers were able to slightly pull ahead with a key three pointer by Freddie Lash early in the fourth quarter. Scoring by the Tigers was balanced as they were led by Erik Crawford's 19 points and Vince Guido's 10 points. Vince Guido was clutch in the fourth quarter going 8 for 8 from the line while the Tigers as a team were 12 for 12.

The Tigers, especially Alphonso Crawford and Mitch Reber, did a nice job on Hamilton's 6' 10'' Eric Jacobsen as he was able to earn a difficult 16 points. Cody Martin was assigned the task of guarding three year starter Jack Cone and did well bothering him all night. As a team the Tigers rebounded well and had only 8 turnovers for the night. The coaching staff is pleased with the tournament as they saw gradual improvement each night.

Come on out and support the Tigers on Tuesday night as they open up the regular season with their first home game versus a tough Brophy ball club. Hope to see you there rooting on the Tigers!

●●● GILBERT - HIGHLAND - Fear the Hop Holiday Tournament ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #02 - November 24, 2010
After an emotional game on the opening night of the Fear the Hop tournament where the Tigers lost a close game to Mesa High they were able to regroup and put Tuesday's game behind them and play a good game to beat the Highland Hawks by a score of 61 to 45.

The Tigers started out strong on their first possession with a three pointer by junior Cody Martin followed by three straight treys by junior Erik Crawford. At the end of the first quarter the Tigers were able to double up the Hawks by a score of 22 to 11. In the second quarter the Tiger's scoring went in a drought as Vince Guido's three pointer was the only points of the quarter, but the Tiger's defense was productive only allowing 6 points for the Hawks. Halftime score was Tigers 25 and Hawks 17.

The Hawks were able to cut the score to 5 points in the start of the 2nd half, but then the Tigers came alive, especially with a flurry of baskets at the end of the quarter. In the final stanza the Tigers moved the ball well, ran clock and executed on the offensive end fairly well. They were able to get to the charity stripe 13 times in the 4th quarter. The Tigers were led in scoring by Erik Crawford's 26 points and Cody Martin's 11 points. Senior point guard, Vince Guido, did a nice job running the offense and senior Alphonso Crawford was able to play good defense versus Highland's freshmen Jake Toolson holding him to 3 points on the night.

The Tigers will play at 4 pm on Saturday afternoon versus the well coached Hamilton Huskies to close out the 2010 Mesa High Thanksgiving tournament

●●● GILBERT - MESA - Fear the Hop Holiday Tournament ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #01 - November 23, 2010
Mesa senior point guard Jahii Carson is going to have to get used to seeing what he saw in Tuesday's boys basketball season opener: the dreaded box-and-one defense.

Gilbert utilized it to perfection in building a 43-23 lead early in the second half, before the 5-foot-10 Carson finally got some offensive help and the Jackrabbits went on a 22-0 run en route to a 60-52 victory in the first round of Mesa's Fear the Hop tournament.

A February-like crowd filled the Mesa bleachers to watch No.1 Mesa and the newly signed Arizona State Sun Devil. Carson didn't score in the first quarter and didn't make his first field goal until the third quarter.

He missed a dunk in the fourth quarter trying to do a 360 move on a breakaway. But in the end he was clutch. He zipped some nice passes for baskets. His 3-pointer gave Mesa a 52-48 lead with 4:20 left.

Carson finished with 15 points. Junior guard Desmond Medder had 20 points in his varsity debut. But he suffered a high left ankle sprain coming down after leaping high for the game-clinching rebound with 39 seconds left.

It doesn't appear Medder will be able to finish the tournament this week. He left the gym on crutches. His dad, Bike Medder, said Desmond was going to ice the ankle tonight and have it examined Wednesday.

In the second half, Mesa did a better job defending Erik Crawford, who made four 3-pointers and scored 20 of his 24 points in the first half. Mesa also started trapping Gilbert in a full-court press in the second half. Gilbert couldn't handle it and Mesa began to play more like the preseason No.1.

Mesa coach Shane Burcar said the rough start was somewhat expected because there are so many new players this year. He said he feels the team will continue to improve and adjust to the box-and-ones. Carson forced the issue at times, and it got him into foul trouble.

Gilbert could be a sleeper. Legendary coach Tom Bennett is on the bench with head coach Jay Caserio. And as much as Bennett would rather stay in the background, you've got to believe he's going to have a big influence. Gilbert won the big-school state championship in 2003 when Bennett led an overachieving bunch.
