Gilbert too much for Thunder
By Jeffery Edgington, Special to AFN
Desert Vista Coach Gino Crump still looked perplexed on his walk out to the team bus.

Days after clicking in a 93-point effort against rival Mountain Pointe his team struggled, going 18 of 55 from the field, in a 54-51 loss to Gilbert.

Ninth-ranked Gilbert was slightly better as the win was pivotal to potentially earning a 6A State Tournament first-round bye.

"Credit to our defense tonight. We knew they were trying to go inside. Our bigs fared well against their athletes, " Gilbert coach Jay Caserio said.

Crump was disgruntled but complimented Gilbert's effort on that end of the floor.

"We had the looks tonight just couldn't knock them down. Definitely felt as if there was a lid on the rim in the third quarter. Credit to Jay; he had his boys ready defensively. We had seven in the third. That number three (Doc Self) really got going there for a stretch, " added Crump.

The fourth-ranked Thunder (14-5, 5-2) only had seven points in a detrimental third quarter, but it was still a game.

Leading 29-27 the Thunder couldn't muster much inside with the usual suspects Westley Harris and Caleb Simmons. The high-scoring duo only attributed 5 and 13, respectively.

Gilbert (12-10, 4-3) pulled away down the stretch 54-51 courtesy of Self, who is barely old enough to drive but he steered the Tigers in the final 16 minutes enough to a huge power-points victory.

Self connected on three 3-pointers on four possessions to break the log-jam. He also hit three inside the arc and two free throws to finish with 19 points.

"He has the potential to be special. Doc is as fast as any guard in the state. We talked about their press-defense, and I can joke about it now, but I encouraged it. I have confidence in my kid to break through it," added Caserio.

Self just felt it was confidence from his teammates.

"Obviously. I can't be in the position I am to hit those shots without our defense. My teammates got me the ball and I was in a nice rhythm there for a few possessions. It felt good. We don't sit there in the timeout and say hey feed one particular person for the record, " joked Self.

The win wasn't all fun however. Unfortunately a key piece to last-seasons Final Four run, Nick LaMancusa went down with an apparent injury. It was a loose ball situation and he landed awkward on his shooting hand.

"That was unfortunate. We don't think it's broken. Nick has been one of the hardest-working players I've ever had. He isn't a score-first type. He is the most team-oriented individual as you'll meet. It's a devastating loss. We will need somebody to step up like a Trajan Hawkins for example. It's going to take a little more from everyone," emphasized Caserio.
